Beauty Cruelty Free Empowerment Review

Mii: Flawless vs Absolute Face Base

I have been on the hunt for a high-end quality foundation that is cruelty-free for quite some time now. It is the one product that I feel can either work FOR you or AGAINST you. And more often than not, it is a case of working against you (read: foundation can be quite the backstabber) . In fact, I’d much rather opt to wear no foundation at all than going out of the house feeling like I have a heavy, plastered mask on my face. Add accentuation of flaky skin, pores or fine lines and you’ll really see me running for the hills. By now you would have picked up that I am quite a snob when it comes to foundation.

When I received the Flawless Face Base and the Absolute Face Base from Mii Cosmetics I had all my fingers and toes crossed that I would finally find a soulmate (okay maybe that’s being slightly dramatic! But honestly, finding the perfect foundation has taken me longer than it did to find my husband!).

All photos were taken by the very talented Vano Photography and I am wearing a combination of both foundations (Flawless and Absolute)

So today I will give you the lowdown on both these foundations, my experience with them and how I use them. You’ll pick up that these are MORE THAN JUST COLOUR COSMETICS. Especially the Absolute has incredible skincare advantages.

My Experience:

The flawless face base is extremely lightweight. You really do not feel like you are wearing any foundation – much like a BB cream except with a bit more coverage. I would say this foundation offers light to medium coverage that is buildable to your preference. I find that I need to go in with concealer afterwords for extra coverage only in certain areas. The formula is quite a thin liquid – something I am not used to. But it works REALLY WELL and I’m guessing it is also the reason for the feather-light feeling on the skin.

I am not usually a fan of applying foundation with my fingers, but in the case of this formula I got the best results when I applied it first with my fingers and then just dabbed over it with my beauty blender to smooth it all out. By using this application technique I had almost no product wastage as opposed to the times I used a foundation brush or beauty blender only.

What made me fall in love with this foundation however was the fact that it acted like…what I can only describe as a ‘beautyface filter’ . It gives a sort-of blurring effect which creates that natural, airbrushed finish that we are all after. The light-diffusing particles works their magic by reflecting light away from the skin and blurring out fine lines, pores, wrinkles and other imperfections.  It also fades into the skin really well. So people will notice your face and skin rather than noticing the fact that you are wearing foundation. Any foundation that manages to do that scores major brownie points in my books.

This has become my staple item for any daytime makeup – and for good reason. It provides just enough coverage for a no-makeup makeup look, the lightweight formula is super comfortable and removal is a breeze. It also has good lasting power but I do find it necessary to use powder to set my t-zone to keep the shine at bay. It has more of a silky look and feel as opposed to a matte finish. I suggest that you still apply sunscreen underneath this foundation, especially because the SPF10 is reduced when the foundation is not applied liberally.

MII ABSOLUTE FACE BASE SPF30 – 30ml for R562

My shade: Utterly Fair

IMG_9869

Mii’s Description:

“A true confidante keeps your secrets safe and will never blow your cover. Our full coverage foundation has a feather-light feel, bringing you refined radiance from dusk ’til dawn. With natural pomegranate complex to actively lock in moisture, gotu kola extract to help cell renewal and SPF 30 to protect, your skin will not only look flawlessly fresh, but feel perfectly hydrated too. Our fullest coverage foundation. Ideal for all skin types.”

My experience:

First off, this one comes in a glass bottle, not a plastic tube, so in terms of packaging this one is much more eco-friendly and luxurious. This foundation has a slightly thicker formula but still has a lightweight feel on the skin. I personally prefer this formula. It offers much higher coverage and I would say it falls into the medium to high coverage category – depending on how you choose to apply it. As with the previous one, the Absolute Face Base is 100% buildable. The coverage and formula of this foundation is comparable to the cult classis ‘Estee Lauder Double Wear’. I just prefer this one because it is CRUELTY-FREE and more budget-friendly (NB to us working students).IMG_9712

The foundation provides a matte finish without exaggerating or drying out already-dry or dehydrated skin. This is because of the Pomegranate complex and Gotu Kola extract included in this foundation.

Pomegranate complex:

  • Locks in Moisture
  • Conditions and softens skin
  • Protects the skin (from free-radicals and and sun damage – does NOT replace an SPF)

Gotu Kola:

  • Ancient healing herb
  • Anti-aging benefits
  • Renewal of skin cells
  • Increased collagen production
  • Improved circulation

I also love that this foundation has an SPF of 30! However, if I know I will be in direct sunlight I still apply a sunscreen underneath this in case I did not apply enough of the foundation. A little goes a long way with this one.

Out of all the foundations I have tried to date, this is by far my favourite. Keep in mind though we all have different skin types and preferences so find what works for you.

I have reviewed 2 of 6 foundation options offered by the Mii Cosmetics Range. They also have a:

Shade Range and Exciting News

At the moment most of the Mii Cosmetics foundations come in only 5 or 6 shades in South Africa. HOWEVER they have confirmed that new shades are launching early next year (2019) catering for darker skin tones. (Round of applause!)

What foundation am I wearing in these photos?

I used the Flawless Face Base all over my face and used the Absolute Face Base where I would usually conceal and highlight (ie under my eyes, my nose, around my nose (where I suffer from redness and at times eczema), chin and lower forehead area).
