Lovisa Skin {Review}

Ever wondered if completely organic and natural skincare products can deliver the same results as high-end chemical-based products? You’re in good company… So have I! Until I tried Lovisa for the past month. I was intrigued by this brand from the get-go, but I must admit I had my doubts. Could this really do anything for problem skin or was it just a basic cleanser (minus the toxins and nasties)?

For reference: I have a combination skin type (yeah worst of both worlds…sigh) and am prone to hormonal and stress-induced breakouts.

The three products that I have been testing:

  • Lovisa Young & Clear Cleanser
  • Lovisa Skin Polisher
  • Lovisa Young & Clear Serum

First Impressions

So, it’s been one of those months. With deadlines piled up, being woman-down with the flu and laryngitis and just trying to keep head above water – I did not have much time to spare for skincare rituals (which I actually really enjoy). These three products however made it possible for me to follow a quick, simple and easy skincare routine without having to face the consequences of dull, dry and “angry” skin. To me, its really important to find a routine that’s simple enough for me to stick to even when life is… a lot…so this was a major selling-point for me.

What really got me excited though was the fact that Lovisa Skin is completely cruelty-free (major brownie points!!!) as well as paraben-free. The ingredients (all listed below) are simple, all pass the can-you-pronounce-it test and consists out of vitamins, plant extracts and essential oils.

It’s simple really, if you wouldn’t want to ingest any ingredient in a product, it should not be going on your skin either – dermal absorption is a thing!

Lovisa Skin is manufactured in my hometown Port Elizabeth so I have had the privilege to meet the owner, Lisa Voges. The passion, experience, research and personal testing (by Lisa) that goes into every Lovisa product is tangible and really sets this brand apart from the rest.

Lovisa Young & Clear Cleanser

Lovisa Skin Cleanser

  • Castille Soap
  • Purified Water
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Green Tea
  • Lemongrass
  • Grapefruit

My Experience:

This one is formulated specifically for combination to oily skin and I can tell why. You know that squeaky-clean feeling you get when you double cleanse your hair? This cleanser does that for your face. Initially I was concerned that this might result in stripping of my skin barrier but it was clear (and still is) that my skin-barrier is safely in-tact and happier than ever with this combination of skincare.

The formula is a clear gel and can easily be used with cotton pads or hands. You can definitely smell the lemongrass, but I got used to this earthy scent so quickly and now actually look forward to it.

What makes this cleanser great for my skin is that it does a thorough cleanse and leaves my skin mattified but not dry! A rare find!

Lovisa Skin Polisher

Lovisa Skin Polisher

  • Teff Grain
  • Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • Chai Seeds
  • Rice Powder
  • Dried Rosehip
  • Almond Oil

My Experience:

This is a dry mix that should be added to the cleanser and then used as an exfoliater. A little warning, the contents in this bottle looks almost like bird seed. But don’t let that put you off – it’s a good thing! It means this exfoliator is NOT filled with plastic (the microbeeds found in most exfoliants), makes use of natural abrasives and is much gentler your skin (and the environment).

If its your first time using a natural polisher, it might take some getting used to but it is so worth it!

Sheer Tip: I prefer rinsing my face with a wet face cloth (I use the Just Me face towel) as this makes removing the seeds and grains much easier.

Lovisa Young & Clear Serum

Lovisa Young & Clear Serum

  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Rosehip
  • Celendula
  • Tea Tree
  • Lavender

My experience:

Yes I’ve left the best for last. THIS, my lovelies, is EVERYTHING. It is one of those products that you pray never ever gets discontinued because you have found your soulmate-serum. I was nervous about applying an oil-based serum to my T-zone (despite knowing some of the best treatments for oily skin is found in certain…oils). BUT was I pleasantly surprised. Every morning after applying this serum I wake up with dewy, plump and all-around youthful-looking skin. I am now also a firm believer in the “beauty sleep” but with a few drops of this magic potion.

I have been blown away by the results. It has cleared up my skin (in combination with the cleanser and polisher) in a way that no other skincare treatment has ever managed to do (including the pill). The tea tree scent is quite distinctive but only for a few minutes after application. I personally do not mind this, in fact I love the concentrated smell because then I know the serum is going to work its magic on my skin. This serum also doubles up (actually triples up) as an eye-cream and moisturiser – time and cost-efficient!!!

Essentially, this serum keeps my skin hydrated (which prevents aging) and at the same time fights greasiness and breakouts. It’s honestly a gift from nature (and Lisa, the owner of Lovisa Skin) for any girl/women with combo or oily skin. I find it provides just the right balance for women my age, who are focusing on anti-aging as a preventative measure rather than a reversal treatment.

If you can only afford one product – let it be this one. But I found the combination really worked well together.

Yes! An exfoliator such as this polisher removes the dead skin cells that prevents products (like the serum) from penetrating the skin. It is also essential for anti-aging, improved skin texture and complexion. I do however also enjoy an acid-based, non-abrasive exfoliant (great for sensitive skin) so I now include both the polisher (twice a week) as well as an acid-based exfoliant (once a week).

A million times yes. I still wake up amazed at what it does overnight. It has done wonders for my skin in terms of hydration, sebum regulation, clearing up and preventing breakouts.

So to answer my own question, these 100% organic skincare products have excelled my expectations and the results have been as powerful as chemically-based products just without the nasties!

Next on my list of Lovisa products to purchase:

  • The DermaRoller
  • The DermaPlaner
